3.1 PAL vs. NTSC

  • PAL (Phase Alternating Line): Used in Europe, Australia, and parts of Asia/Africa. Games run at 50 Hz, with a resolution of 576i (often upscaled to 720×576).
  • NTSC (National Television System Committee): Used in North America and Japan. Games run at 60 Hz, resolution 480i (720×480).
  1. Emulation (PCSX2): If you are playing your legally backed-up PS2 games on a PC using the PCSX2 emulator, you cannot insert a physical cheat disc. You need the ISO of the Action Replay to boot up the cheat menu before swapping to your game ISO.
  2. Soft-modded Consoles (FreeMCBoot/OPL): If you are running your games off a hard drive (via Open PS2 Loader) or using FreeMCBoot, you no longer use physical discs. You need a digital backup of the Action Replay to launch cheats from the PS2 browser.
