Recovering Deleted Videos on Android: A Step-by-Step Guide

Abstract

The recovery of deleted multimedia files from Android smartphones is often advertised by mobile recovery apps, but the success rate for files deleted several years ago is rarely studied. This paper investigates whether a 5‑year‑old deleted video can be recovered using popular Android video recovery applications. We examine the Android file system (ext4/F2FS), TRIM, garbage collection, and wear leveling in flash memory. Experimental results on a controlled Android device show that recovery of videos deleted more than a few weeks is nearly impossible unless the device was never used after deletion and no TRIM command was executed. We conclude that claims of recovering years‑old videos are misleading for typical user scenarios. Recovering Deleted Videos on Android: A Step-by-Step Guide
