Abstract: This paper examines the unexpected afterlife of the 2014 Bollywood romantic comedy Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania (HSKD) on the Chinese video-sharing platform Bilibili. While the film is a quintessentially North Indian reimagining of Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge (DDLJ), its presence on Bilibili—a site famous for its "bullet-screen" (danmu) commenting culture—reveals a fascinating case of transcultural consumption. This paper argues that Bilibili users do not passively consume HSKD as a foreign artifact. Instead, they actively deconstruct, meme-ify, and re-contextualize its themes of rebellion, family, and romance, drawing parallels with their own generational struggles against conservative social structures in contemporary China.
