Index of Happy Death Day — Research Paper

Abstract

This paper analyzes the 2017 horror-comedy film Happy Death Day and its 2019 sequel Happy Death Day 2U, directed by Christopher Landon and produced by Jason Blum. It examines the films’ narrative structure, use of the time-loop trope, genre blending of slasher and comedy, character development (with emphasis on protagonist Tree Gelbman), thematic concerns (identity, redemption, and self-growth), and cultural reception. The aim is to show how the franchise revitalizes formulaic horror through tonal contrast, empathetic characterization, and formal play with repetition.

  1. The First Loop: Tree wakes up to her roommate's alarm clock and is killed by a masked killer later that day.
  2. The Discovery: Tree starts to notice small changes in her surroundings and conversations, trying to figure out what's happening.
  3. The Investigation: Tree starts to investigate her own murder, gathering clues and suspecting various people.
  4. The Twist: Tree discovers that she is the one who has been killing herself, trying to change her past.

8. Future Index (As of 2026)

A third film, Happy Death Day 3, has been discussed but not officially greenlit. Director Landon has expressed interest in completing a trilogy exploring the “looper device” origin.
