- The Secure Enclave Processor (SEP): The SEP is a separate chip that manages Touch ID, Face ID, and passcodes. The iOS kernel and the SEP communicate via a secure channel. If you boot a custom ramdisk that does not match the SEP’s firmware version, the iPhone XR will panic and reboot.
- The A12 Barrier: The A12 chip introduced Pointer Authentication Codes (PAC) and a stricter SEP. The famous Checkm8 exploit (permanent unpatchable bootrom exploit) works on A5 through A11 chips. The iPhone XR (A12) is not vulnerable to Checkm8. This means you cannot simply tether boot any arbitrary ramdisk.
