The Rift: Transphobia in Gay and Lesbian Spaces

• The L Bar Exclusion: In the 1970s and 80s, many lesbian separatist groups excluded trans women, arguing they carried "male socialization." The infamous Michigan Womyn's Music Festival barred trans women for decades, creating a deep scar that still affects trans-lesbian relations.
• The Gay "Drop of T": In recent years, fringe groups like "LGB Alliance" (explicitly anti-trans) have attempted to legally sever the T from the LGB, arguing that trans issues are distinct from sexuality. This is viewed by the majority of the LGBTQ community as an existential threat, as it unravels the legal protections (e.g., Bostock v. Clayton County, where the Supreme Court ruled that firing someone for being trans is sex discrimination under civil rights law) that protect everyone.
