These conflicts are real, though polls show they represent a minority of LGBTQ individuals.
In that era, "drag queens," "transvestites," and gender-nonconforming people were often excluded from mainstream gay rights organizations, which sought to present a "respectable" image to heterosexual society. The Stonewall Riots (1969): The Origin Story Popular history often credits gay men like Marsha P. Johnson and Sylvia Rivera with sparking the modern LGBTQ rights movement at the Stonewall Inn. However, both Johnson and Rivera were transgender activists (Johnson was a trans woman and drag queen; Rivera was a trans woman). They were on the front lines, throwing bricks and resisting police brutality. Yet, in the years following Stonewall, mainstream gay and lesbian organizations often excluded them, viewing their gender nonconformity as too radical or "embarrassing."
