Good Morning! And In Case I Don’t See Ya... Why The Truman Show on 4K Blu-ray is the Ultimate Reality Check
The highlight of this disc is the HDR (High Dynamic Range) grading, available in both HDR10 and Dolby Vision. When you think of The Truman Show, you think of that impossibly blue sky, the manicured green lawns, and the eerie, clean sunlight. On previous formats, those colors looked flat. This 4K release is sourced from a new scan of the original 35mm film negative, resulting in a native 4K DI (Digital Intermediate). The first thing to note is texture. Previous Blu-ray releases suffered from DNR (Digital Noise Reduction), leading to waxy skin tones and scrubbed grain. The 4K disc restores the natural filmic grain structure. Filmed on Super 35 (with Panavision cameras), the image now has a pleasing, organic feel.
The Bad: Because the world of Seahaven is supposed to feel a bit sterile, the rear channels are underutilized. You get ambient sounds (waves, birds, traffic), but don’t expect aggressive pans or directional effects. The famous scene where the stage light falls from the “sky” lacks the thunderous verticality that a modern Atmos track could have provided.
