Style Over Substance
To call Van Helsing “good” feels like missing the point. It is loud, CGI-heavy, and scientifically illiterate. The plot is a tapestry of nonsense involving a “left hand of God,” werewolf bites as a cure for vampirism, and an ending that raises more questions than it answers. However, the film knows exactly what it is: a rollercoaster. The production design (courtesy of Allan Cameron) is lush gothic horror, and Alan Silvestri’s score soars with heroic bombast.
