Vmware-vcenter-converter-standalone-5.5-3 [better] May 2026

⚠️ Critical Note: Version 5.5.3 is extremely legacy (released ~2014). It is not compatible with modern ESXi 6.5+ hosts or Windows 10/Server 2016+ clients. Use this guide only for legacy environments (ESXi 5.0/5.1/5.5) or air-gapped migrations of old OSes (Windows XP/2003/2008).

  • TCP 443 (HTTPS – management)
  • TCP 9089 (agent-to-converter communication)

3. Preparing Source & Destination

Source machine:

  • Disable firewalls (or open TCP 443, 9089 inbound).
  • Run chkdsk /f and reboot (critical to avoid VSS failures).
  • Defragment if HDD (skip for SSD).
  • Uninstall incompatible AV or backup agents.
  • ESXi 5.0, 5.1, 5.5 (including update builds)
  • vCenter Server 5.5
  • Limited support for ESXi 4.x and 6.0 (but not certified)
  1. Install VMware Tools: Mount the VMware Tools ISO for your ESXi version (5.5 or compatible). Do not attempt to install tools designed for ESXi 7.0 on a VM converted by 5.5.3 – it will fail.
  2. Remove Legacy Drivers: Uninstall any physical server drivers (HP ProLiant agents, Dell OpenManage, Intel RAID drivers).
  3. Consolidate Snapshots: Converter creates a snapshot during cloning. After verifying the VM boots, delete the snapshot to reclaim space.
  4. Test for 72 hours: Old OSs have highly sensitive clock timers. Leave the VM running in a sandbox to ensure no W32Time crashes or HAL issues surface.

VMware vCenter Converter Standalone 5.5.3 remains a critical legacy tool for IT administrators specifically needing to virtualize aging systems like Windows Server 2003 or Windows XP, which are no longer supported by modern versions of the software. Avoid It If:

  • Your target is ESXi 7.0 or later (the converter will fail to upload).
  • You require official support or CVE compliance.
  • You have the option to use the free StarWind V2V Converter (less crash-prone for modern OS).
