Installing the legacy vSphere Client 5.5 on Windows 11 requires utilizing specific compatibility workarounds.

  • Option B — Attempt direct install on Windows 11 (higher failure risk):

Part I: The Nature of the Beast – What Was vSphere Client 5.5?

Check Run this program in compatibility mode for and choose Windows 7 or Windows 8 from the dropdown menu.

    Step 5: Post-Installation & Connection

    • Launch VMware vSphere Client from Start Menu.
    • Enter your ESXi 5.5 IP, root username, and password.
    • Warning on connection: You will see "Invalid SSL certificate" – click Ignore.
    • Known bug on Windows 11: The virtual machine console may crash. To fix this, disable "Accelerated 3D Graphics" in the console settings after connecting to a VM.

The Better Alternative: Use the Web Client

If the desktop client refuses to work on your Windows 11 machine, remember that vSphere 5.5 introduced the vSphere Web Client (Flex-based).
