- Choices aren’t just moral but strategic:
- Eregion is the anchor. The siege of Celebrimbor’s city is not a finale event; it is the engine of the season. The relationship between Sauron (as “Annatar,” the Lord of Gifts) and the prideful elf-smith Celebrimbor (a tragic, brilliant Charles Edwards) becomes a toxic master-apprentice dynamic. It is Shakespearean—full of gaslighting, obsession, and creeping dread.
- The Harfoot/Stranger plot is leaner. While still the most disconnected storyline, The Stranger (Daniel Weyman) and Nori’s journey to Rhûn is less meandering. The introduction of the Dark Wizard (a sly, sinister Ciarán Hinds) and the proto-hobbits’ confrontation with “the Heart of the Storm” finally gives this arc a purpose beyond nostalgia.
- Numenor is trimmed. The political soap opera of the island kingdom takes a backseat, wisely saving its major conflicts for Season 3. Here, we get just enough of Pharazôn’s coup and Elendil’s fall from grace to keep the plates spinning.
